Like the Milky Way, Sombrero is a spiral galaxy. However, we see Sombrero edge-on from our vantage point from Earth, rather than the face-down perspective that is more familiar.

Sorry but there are billions and billions and billions of stars in the universe and it's foolish to think that we are the only planet in the entire universe that can have life.

I agree with Oscy. While it's certainly fun to have thought experiments about what might be out there, there's never any reason to behave if any of our conclusions are true unless we have evidence for them.

Even though the distances involved make it unlikely we are going to communicate with civilizations elsewhere, it's just not in keeping with the scientific method to positively assert that it MUST be true that other civilizations ARE out there.

    No arrogance required.

You countering a different argument. This is all irrelevant when agreeing or disagreeing that there's a higher probability, however small, that we are currently on the only planet harbouring intelligent life.

As an aside, the 'building blocks of life' and similar theories are just that, theories, and they are only based on what's immediately around us. That only builds part of a picture. Same for all theories, including such important ones like gravity, getting proven wrong as the years go by

You're basing this on absolutely nothing though, except our very own existence. One is not a big enough number to find a recurring theme, we know nothing about how the universe truly works outside what we see physically and theories, and the universe as we know it is actually very young and still growing.

It remains logical, then, that while there is a chance of other intelligent life, the probability is slightly higher that we are currently alone, until further notice.

That is pure arrogance. There might be civilizations out there older than us. They were old while our ancestors were swinging from the trees and living in caves. Earth's not the center of the Universe. Remember, our ancestors thought that the Earth was flat.
