This shows a pendulum effect from a suspended reverse homopolar motor. (I call it reverse because battery and magnet are the rotating parts, rather than the wire rotating in a "normal" homopolar motor)

The coins attached give the pendulum/motor more weight, and form the basis for my 5-speed homopolar motor, which was going to be this video... until I discovered this mesmerizing pendulum effect.

For Homopolar Motor Kits, with 3 magnets and 6 feet of copper wire, order from the good folks at the American Stirling Engine website: http://www.stirlingengine.com/ecommerce/product.tcl?usca_p=t&product_id=93

Order the best neodymium super-magnets here:

  • can u use any cylinder magnite or dose it have to be a cetain type

  • @The119manish

It has to be a neodymium supermagnet. They are available at some craft and hardware stores, or online at a place like K&J Magnetics (link in the "Show more" box).

  • i clicked this vid becouse of the word homo..It made me giggle... =D

You must have a good laugh when you pick up homogenized milk!

  • This is hardly a pendulum in the scientific sense. The pivot moves, it doesn't have a constant period and the trajectory is erratic. But hey, you do have 50k views!

The models of modern physics are telling us there is an infinite number of parallel universes right in front of us constantly.

Viewing this device from a strict scientific view is limited, because perhaps in other universes, it has a valid reality as a pendulum in a non-scientific sense.

In one universe, for example, this pendulum could be seen in an artistic sense. In another universe, it might be heard in a musical sense. In yet another, it is experienced in a Zen sense.

It demonstrates a simple pendulum made with a magnet and a piece of wire. It may possibly be the world's simplest powered pendulum.

  • and the purpose of this in life is?
