A short film which tries to compress half a century into 4 minutes. With grateful thanks to http://www.youtube.com/user/BeechSundowner for the bird sequences, to Amy Caldwell - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=244895 or http://www.myspace.com/amycaldwellmusic - for the fabulous singing, to http://www.youtube.com/user/RayWilliamJohnson for making me laugh and to Herbert Paganini for 'Gracias a la Vida' .

It should be noted that Michel and Amy have never actually met: their collaboration on this song was via the Net.

I guess any attempt to squeeze 50 years of world history into four minutes is bound to be very subjective, but here are the references made in this film:

1959 - Atom bomb trials in Arizona
1960 - Sharpeville massacre
1961 - Martin Luther King - 'I have a dream'
1962 - Nelson Mandela arrested
1963 - J F Kennedy assassinated
1965 - The Beatles
1968 - Man lands on the Moon
1968 - Mini-skirts
1968 - Student riots in Paris
1960's/70s - Vietnam war
1960's/70s - Women's Lib
1969 - Golda Meir's calls for negotiated peace for Israel
1976 - Riots in Soweto intensify calls for Nelson Mandela's release
1979 - Ayatollah Khomeini sweeps to power
1979 - As does Margaret Thatcher
1980 - John Lennon shot
1984 - Indira Ghandi assassinated
1987 - Reagan & Gorbachev sign arms reduction treaty
1989 - Berlin wall falls
1989 - A lone student braves Red Army tanks in Tiananmen Square
1990 - Nelson Mandela finally released after 27 years
2001 - Attack on the WTC in New York
2003 - Saddam statue falls in Baghdad, Iraq
2009 - Obama inauguration

And here are the lyrics to sandy Denny's immortal classic, which provides the soundtrack:

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving;
Ah - how can they know it's time for them to go ?
Before the winter fire, we'll still be dreaming:
I do not count the time.

Who knows where the time goes ?
Who knows where the time goes ?

Sad, deserted shore - your fickle friends are leaving;
Ah but then you know, it's time for them to go.
But I will still be here - I have no thought of leaving:
I do not count the time.

For who knows where the time goes ?
Who knows where the time goes ?

And I'm not alone, while my love is near me;
I know it will be so, until it's time to go:
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again -
I do not count the time.

For who knows where the time goes ?
Who knows where the time goes ?

  • This has to be one of your best videos to date.
