Wild Betta splendens have dull brown coloration when it's frightened, a slim body, crimson red and green colors of the fins when it flares, and "few" shiny green glittering dots on the scales (unlike the domesticated ones that have solid-colored scales). After some more careful analyzation, the fish in the video may not be a complete wild specimen (which I thought it was at first). It still has some representative traits though.

Key characteristic that distinguishes it from other members of the Splendens Complex: each gill cover have at most 2 red bars.

  • where did you get that betta from

  • @jjjlennox14

I bought it from a local fish shop, but that was a few years back. Now, the only species I have are the smaragdinas.

  • good job on your aquarium set-up. I like the rocks. Add some dried banana leaves.

  • Thanks. The set up was for spawning purposes and wasn't meant for permanent display. After the fry are free-swimming, I dis-assemble them and remove the fry to their growing environment and reassemble the rocks again for another spawning event.

  • Can these fish be housed in a Community tank, or with other species?

  • Although mines are not the true wild splendens, I find that can be housed in both community tank and with other species. The only problem is that when you separate the males, they will become very aggressive and may never be compatible with members of the same species.

  • regarding your comment below...which probably explains why people exploit them for their fighting abilities.
