Why would Taiwan want to reunite with China? It would mean giving up their democracy, which they fought so hard to get from the KMT. Until the 1980's, Taiwan was little different from the PRC in terms of political freedom. On what terms would the two nations unite, berldfjl? The PRC would demand that Taiwan surrender it's sovereignty and become a province. Taiwan would demand that the KMT become the government of China and Taiwan. Only when the PRC embraces democracy would there be a chance.
Taiwan's constitution says taiwan is a part of China, not PRC. True some people in Taiwan does not like the current constitution, but before it is changed, it should be abide by, that's how democracy and rule of law works. The newly elected President Ma has state clearly that he wants to eventually reunite with mainland China, the people of Taiwan have made their choice.
berldsfjl - look at reality not Beijing's rhetoric. The ROC constitution doesn't say that Taiwan is part of the PRC. Taiwan's an independent nation: its own army, currency, economy, foreign policy and democratically elected officials by universal suffrage. The people voted for KMT because of corruption in the government. The Taiwanese didn't vote to "surrender to China". Taiwan is free and democratic. Demoracy and accountability breed credibility. Beijing, however, is accountable to no one.
