Premier Bal Arntzen Lloyd 1999

Featuring Lloyd Arntzen on soprano sax 1999
When I played with my Vancouver Hot Five our reedplayer was a big fan of Johnny Dodds and Sidney Bechet. I had a video of Bechet playing Premier Bal. Lloyd was intrigued by this virtually unknown tune and shortly after I had made him a sound copy he introduced it into our group. Here at a school workshop he played it for the first time in public.
Our Vancouver Hot Five consisted of bob Erwig on cornet ( not in this clip) Lloyd on reeds, Alan Matheson on piano, Bill Dixon banjo and Steve Toren tuba

  • In french we say : "Premier BAL" with only one L.

  • Oh Oh Maume,

It was just a spelling mistake. I knew it had only one L. I made the correction, thank you!

  • Wonderful rendition and great technique produicing a very beautiful "voice".

All that said, Bechet had/has a voice that speaks from his soul and no one can ever match that. Bechet remains unique.

I was fortunate enough to hear him in concert at the Olympia in Paris in the 1950's when I was a student. Took my breath away!!

  • Dommage que le son ne soit pas bon. Sinon, j'adore ce morceau, l'un des plus beaux de Bechet.
