September 23 2010 - Amtrak's inaugural run of it's Great Dome Ocean View, on the Adirondack. For the 2010 season. Heading north to Montreal through Cantic Quebec.

Ocean View, car 10031, was from a batch of six Great Domes built in 1955 from the Budd Passenger Car Company. For the Great Northern Railroad's "Empire Builder". All named. 1390 - Glacier View. 1391 - Ocean View. 1392 - Mountain View. 1393 - Lake View. 1394 - Prairie View. 1395 - River View. (Owned by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy RR).

All six cars were conveyed to Amtrak in 1971. Only Lake View, car 1393 is gone. Bought by the Southern Pacific. Cannibalized, then scrapped in 1983.

Built on six axle trucks, the cars are built to last. Amtrak renovated three Great Domes in 1985 and used them on their Auto-Train between Lorton VA and Sanford FL till 1994. Ocean View is the last Great Dome owned by Amtrak. The rest are owned privately.

The Ocean View will run for four weeks on Amtrak's Adirondack in 2010 (except Wednesday's.) Between Montreal QC and Albany NY. Clearance restrictions in Penn Station New York, prohibit the car from operating south.

After running on the Adirondack, the car is off to Chicago to run on the Cardinal between Chicago and Washington D.C. for four weeks.

In the video shot on September 23, the Ocean View has special decals applied to its car body. Celebrating the fall foliage season.

It was a special moment for me seeing the Ocean View. I have a Model Railroader magazine from 1984 with diagrams and pictures of this unique Dome. Picked up in Vancouver B.C., in 1986 when I was ten years old. I said to myself, looking at those black and white pictures then, that I would someday see that special dome car. In 2010, it came full circle as I met up with an old friend.

Enjoy everyone!

  • Nice catch dude! LOL!

  • @13orio - thanks

  • Not sure what I think of this paint scheme...I liked the Phase IV colours the best.

  • @trainglen22 - It's been repainted into retro phaze III paint. Black roof. Silver body and the stripes down the middle of the car. I'll be capturing the train soon. Hopefully with one of the heritage repainted P42's too.

  • Great Video! I read in Trains Mag that Amtrak might by another Dome for use on the cardinal, it would be an ex GrandLux Dome

  • @AmtrakBoys - Thank you! It's a shame that Amtrak didn't keep another Great Dome for today. The Ocean View is an orphin in the Amtrak fleet.

  • I wish they would run that on the silver service trains down to florida. With the new penn station tunnels proposed by Amtrak becomming a reality, maybe we will see that day!

  • Very interesting idea for a movie!

  • note:to see the car pause at 3:23

  • Did you know that i have the amtrak great dome 10031 ocean view Its in HO scale and its not good on sharp curves

  • @bigkillr77 - I wanted to catch it last week but I was sick. It's going to Chicago this Friday.

  • just saw this in schenectady ny today

  • @AmtrakSurfliner768 - Thanks. I'm going to catch it one more time before it heads west to Chicago by the 22nd for service on the Cardinal. After that, I think it will be back on Surfliner service.

  • Nice shot! I was wondering where that thing went. I saw in Pacific Surfliner service about two weeks before this video.

  • @SteveMtrl - thank you very much! :)

  • @AMTK510 - I've heard about the Ocean View being used on the Surfline in past years. I would love to visit So Cali and ride the Coaster-MetroLink trains...and Amtrak's Surfliners. Get some trains on video at Oceanside or Del Mar.

I knew that Amtrak has operated the dome on the Adirondack in the past but I never had time to see it....until that day in 2010. I hope to catch it again Oct 14 before it heads west to Chicago.

  • Great job! You did a really good narration and the footage is great too.

  • Nice shot dude! This is kind of funny to me, because I see the 10031 quite a bit, on the SoCal surfliner service here.

  • @ConrailSD70MAC it done, just look on my channel for "CN and AMTRAK at Cantic"

  • @DrWeed1975 - upload the picture with your video once you capture it. :)

  • @apl1031 - it would be interesting to see the interior view of the car. I know it used to hold 56 coach and 18 lounge seats in the dome prior to Amtrak. 36 more in the lower bar/lounge. I wonder if it's the same layout.

  • @ConrailSD70MAC I have a video off walking through it real quick though I put some up of looking through the front just have to edit them

  • @apl1031 - got any pics of the trip to share?

  • I got to ride in the Great Dome car over the summer, it was the best part of my trip

  • @railfankasey - thanks for the offer Kasey but it's Thanksgiving for us here in Canada and I'll be with family then. I'm not sure what train traffic you might catch as it's a holiday. Maybe next time...
