John Blitheman's evening anthem 'In pace' for SATB choir a cappellla.

John, 1525 -1591 was an organist at Queen Elizabeth's Chapel Royal.

Worcester Cathedral choir, director Donald Hunt.

In pace in id ipsum,
dormiam et requiescam.
Si dedero somnum occulis meis
et palpebris meis dormitationem dormiam et requiescam.
Gloria Patri et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.

'It was probably written during Mary's reign as a respond for Compline in the Sarum rite, complete with the plainsong bits.'

  • I did this at my state's honor' choirs' festival in 2009 and it was the most beautiful piece we did :) ♪♫♪♫♪ Not too challenging for 1st Sopranos though :/ but it was an elegant piece anyway :)

  • Bravo! Cheers from Brazil

  • Very nice! I've always liked Blitheman's keyboard music (he was Bull's teacher), but never heard his vocal works. I wouldn't exactly call it an anthem for Anglican evensong, though--probably written during Mary's reign as a respond for Compline in the Sarum rite, complete with the plainsong bits.
