I've been getting a lot of requests for an updated version of these, discussed in my blog post here:
http://www.traintherightway.com/2009/11/empty-bar-warmups.html
Empty bar work serves several purposes: 1. Gets the blood flowing nicely and acts as a general-purpose warmup
2. Helps ingrain correct bar path, with lots of reps, without getting fatigued
3. Helps work on flexibility in the most important positions for Olympic lifting
4. Allows the lifter to focus on technique, rather than lifting a particular weight
There are other benefits, to be sure, but those are the main ones.
