@hazard2000 To add on to your explanation: He changed the martial art into martial. He then took only the moves that he could use for his 135 pound, fragile body type on bigger guys. The whole aspect was about surviving efficiently, and allowing yourself to use less energy to drain more energy from your opponent. All of this was done using ultimate leverage :)

I went to Relson's school in Charleston, S.C. Had the honor of having him put me in a RN Choke. OMG. It's in the genes, Man! It was like an anaconda was wrapped around my neck. Very humble and gracious man. Signed autographs until the last person left. He looked everyone in the eye and thanked them personally for attending; after he had mopped the floor with all of us! He is a dramatically under recognized Gracie. I owe a great deal to him.

Judo evolved from Traditional Jiu-jitsu, Helio Gracie was taught traditional Jiu-Jitsu and simply took out the stand up part of traditional jiu-jitsu out of BJJ and changed the techniques on the ground slightly
