Maybe the Mayans got bored and didn't want to continue writing down a huge freaking calender.
Mayan #1: Hey Jeff, wanna go see someone getting sacrificed?
Mayan #2: I can't right now I'm working on this calender.
Mayan #1: Ah, come on. You've been working on that for thirty seven years! I'm sure it'll be fine if you leave it be.
