he is definitely Chinese, and he has a chinese name zhang 张 tie 铁 quan拳. if he is not chinese, he must admire chinese culture, and respect chinese martial arts. Otherwise he will not have a chinese name.

Arguing that Zhang is not Chinese because of his Mongolian heritage is the most ignorant thing I've ever heard of. It'd be like saying LeBron and Kobe are not America, they are African. Only lame ass racist morons would resort to such shitty logic.

@bc3256 Well, Zhang Tie Quan is ethnically Mongolian but he was born and raised in China and trained Chinese martial arts of Sanshou and Shuai Jiao while supported by China and holding Chinese nationality. He's still considered Chinese fighter. It's much equivalent to Yoshihiro Akiyama. He's ethnically Korean but he was born and raised in Japan while trained in Judo and fought as Japanese while holding Japanese nationality.

@dss103 For example, boxers, they have very limited form of striking. They mostly train punches only. However, all the time Muay Thai and Sanshou fighters train other areas of their body, boxers have toughened their arms and its techniques, and have become more second nature and powerful than any other arts, which is sometimes more than enough to get themselves a victory. Time is limited. If you don't believe me, go check out Ray Mercer vs Tim Sylvia or check out JDS and Noguiera brothers.

@dss103 And also, Muay Thai do train sweeps, clinches, and some limited forms of takedowns but the difference between sanda and muay thai is, muay thai doesn't emphasize on them as much but rather, emphasize more on elbows and knees while sanda emphasize more on takedowns. It's not matter of ability. It's matter of level of perfection of those techniques.

Muay Thai has proven its effectiveness in MMA. Sanda/Sanshou has proven its effectiveness in MMA. As long as both arts have proven their effectiveness, then it's matter of fighter, NOT the style.
-
@dss103 I train Muay Thai and I respect Sanshou(Sanda) as a very effective art but saying the art is better? I can list shit load of Muay Thai fighters who have given Sanda fighters a run for their money. Even recently, the major icon of Sanda, Cung Le, got heavily fucked by Wanderlei Silva, who trains in Muay Thai. MT's specialties are knees and elbows while Sanda's techniques are deadly takedowns. But to say one is better than the other is absurd.
-
@chinazombie Yeah because sanda is sport san shou and san shou is a war fighting style you dont grapple someone during a battle but they can easily tweak their throws and takedowns to where they can land on top.

Bro this is WEC
I'm waiting for the day when a mongolian fighter named Genkhis Khan enters the ring.

@sophisticatedplayboy Provided they keep to their sanda because that is what makes them unique in terms of fight sport. Honestly, Sanda is better than Muay Thai for MMA because it teaches take downs, take down defense, a wider variety of kicks AND how to catch them and counter. A top level sanda fighter with solid boxing and an understanding of Jiu-jitsu can easily go a long way in MMA and more people need to start training it. Kick catching would work on Silva, jones, makdessi, etc.
