Gaza Part One RESTRICTIONS

This project evolved from a longer 17 minute piece. The final cut was 11 minutes. I have separated into three sections that work almost independently and very well together. The first short section focuses on restrictions that persisted after the withdraw of Israel from Gaza. The second part portrays how the Bush administration urged Abbas to hold early elections allowing Hamas to win control of the government. This part also explains the resulting withdraw of western aid from Gaza and depicts the violence that ensued on both sides. The third and final piece in the series describes how President Bush and his administration staged a coup of the democratically elected Hamas government by lobbying Arab countires for weapons and smuggling them into Gaza. Unfortunately Hamas found out about the plan and overtook the Gaza strip in a preemtive strike. Some of the violence is shown here and parallels are drawn between former illegal actions by the U.S. such as the coup of the democratically elected prime minister Mosadegh of Iran and the Iran-COntra Affair in which the U.S. illegally sold weapons to Iran despite an ban on arms sales to Iran in order to fund the U.S. contra wars in Latin America. A conclusion is given that emphasizes the position of the United Nations and the Arab league that the actions taken by Israel are disproportionate in measure and a real attempt at negotiations is necessary.
