Now that Harry mentions it, I think its safe to say that a great artist is one whose artistry is fueled by humanity, not the drive for personal gain. We can use more people like Jim in this day and age.

I first heard this song on The Muppets long time ago. This and the Banana Boat song are my favorite of Belafonte.

He was a civil rights activist in the sixties. He shared his profits with Martin Luther King, who made little money. He used his wealth to finance freedom rides and help others.
He Is not a black supremecist just because he had a voice.
His "race baiting politics" are from the context of the 50's and 60's. Very different time.
FINALLY this is online!!! Thank you so much for posting this, I could type 1000 words for 1000 years 1000 times a day and I still couldn't come up with the words to describe the stunning combination of Jim's genius, Belafonte's talent and the power that the two created when they came together. No wonder this was one of Jim's favorite songs.
