This afternoon at about 1:45 p.m. the Modesto Police Department was dispatched to Bret Harte Elementary School after it was reported that a woman had just been robbed at gunpoint in front of the school.
The woman had at least one young child with her and was there to pick up her other children. According to police, while she stood by her car two men came up to her, one with a small handgun and demanded her purse. At one point the armed suspect pointed the gun at the head of the woman's 3 year old child.
She complied and the men fled the scene.
Early on a witness reported having scene at least one of the suspects enter a house a few hundred yards from the school so, when police arrived they locked down the school for safety purposes and focused their resources on the house in question. Hanshaw Middle School was also locked down due to how close it was to the robbery.
However, when police finally made entry onto the property the found it to be unoccupied.
At that point, around 3:00 p.m. police decided to lift the lock down allowing parents to retrieve their children. Officials stated that at that point they believed both suspects had fled the area entirely and their was no further danger to the children.
The gunman was described as a white male in his 20's wearing a red shirt, while the second suspect was described as a hispanic male in his 20's wearing a black shirt.
