NEW YORK - A US Airways plane crashed into the Hudson River on Thursday afternoon after striking a bird that disabled two engines, sending passengers fleeing for safety in the frigid waters, a government official said.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said the US Airways Flight 1549 had just taken off from LaGuardia Airport en route to Charlotte, N.C., when the crash occurred in the river near 48th Street in midtown Manhattan.

Ity was a bit fuzzy but really captured the angle and speed of the landing. I remember thinking anything less than a perfect landing would have been a total disaster. If he had even caught a wigtip in the water tghe plane would have cartwheeled and broken apart. Or if had hit a building on his turn towards the river it would have been like another 9/11. Truly amazing.
anyone know how he actually knew how to land this on water? he is an ex engineer and so he knew exactly how to land the plane on the water, i saw this today at college, was doin a little bit on it. he landed on the water because he knew that he would no way be able to land on the two suggested runways, as there were to far so amazingly landed in the water, absolute genius!
Sully was an Air Force pilot and went through hours of emergency flight training. Air Force pilots are taught to remain calm. 3 priorities in order of importance: 1) Aviate, 2) Navigate, 3) Communicate. He did all 3 at the right times.
Yes, I meant calm. I have the habit of typing really fast and at times I make typo's. I assure you I am quite proficient in spelling and grammar otherwise ;-).
