5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) has been tried in cases of depression for a similar reason: the body uses 5-HTP to make serotonin, so providing the body with 5-HTP might therefore raise serotonin levels.

As a supplement, 5-HTP has also been proposed for all the same uses as other antidepressants, including aiding weight loss, preventing migraine headaches, decreasing the discomfort of fibromyalgia, improving sleep quality, and reducing anxiety.

  • As we know, there are various underlying causes of depression, and a lack of serotonin alone may not be the main causative factor. Causes can include prolonged deficiencies of vital nutrients, environmental exposure to toxins, genetic factors that increase vulnerability, minor or major brain trauma, lack of neurotransmitters... the list goes on, and often involves a combination of several factors. When the root causes are identified and corrected with effective treatment, relief CAN be found.

  • (finding these [causes]...) is imperative and can provide the insight needed to make progress and regain health. Your skepticism and discouragement is understandable though given your experience, but I do want to encourage you (and the others who read your comment) that there is hope.

  • @leopower7 - Your strong opinion is noted. But it is simply that, your opinion. While 5-HTP may not help everyone, it's not true to say that it is a placebo. That accusation is thrown out far too often at supplements, but it's very unscientific to definitively say that. Every health issue is a sign that something under the surface is not functioning properly. The law of cause and effect is universal, and disease is no exception. • Its also good to restore serotonin after intense workouts or using mdma (not that i reccomend the latter just if your gonna do it it's good to know 5 htp can help the comedown).

  • Sadly, 5htp is illegal in Australia. A psychologist told me that it was banned because people were loading up on it before taking xtc/mdma. Apparently you can still buy it online from overseas. Hemp foods are also illegal here :(

  • i need some help. does this help with memory i took xtc a week ago and am having memory and attention problems. like adhd so to speak. will this help me to normal.

  • @Pent5HT Yes, but not as much.

  • so when you are aware of the environment you exist in and its damning affects on you, you become depressed or anxous, thats normal why take a drug to stop your biological chemistry reacting in healthy way, if your down either drink more tap water for the flouride hit or face it out it makes you stronger. try and understand the situation and circumstances that affect you and that one day the condition (Not illness) will end or get a lot easyer. it helps to have a good diet, naturel produce.

  • Is it safe to take 5htp with inositol? I have really bad ocd and i used to be on SSRI's(zoloft) it worked but i didnt like that id gain weight and found it hard to orgasm sometimes and i hear a lot of bad things after long term use so im really trying to look for an alternative. and id also like to know when im supposed to take either one per day and how much. I have a a "Finest Natural" 5 HTP at 100 mg and a GNC Inositol at 500 mg.

  • ive bought 5-htp form gnc it worked somewhat but of course its natural . helped out with my sleep aswell. normal sleep habit
