The queen is the head of state (called President in normal countries), i.e. she can fire the Prime Minister (as recently happened in Italy & Greece), dissolve parliament, etc. She controls the secret service (e.g. to get rid of Lady Di). And she's the owner of all state lands, swans, etc. I.e. she holds REAL power&wealth.

If you wanted someone for merely "ceremonial role", Britain should hire a clown -- that would be much cheaper and more entertaining!

@ccd101 overcome the monarchy your about 400 years to late there the English civil war tanked the monarchy's executive power over this country being the queen or king here is merely a ceremonial role these days it holds little to no power what so ever as for cuisine what ever id rather have great thinker writers and inventors we have than being able to cook something that i might enjoy for a few minutes but then its gone pick up a book educate yourself on English history .
