I spoke with Mynga Futrell, co-founder and director of the Brights movement, at the Atheist Alliance International 2009 convention, and she talked about some of the frustrations she's felt concerning the reticence of many in the atheist community to adopt the Brights moniker, and what she sees as a lack of emphasis of nonbelievers' role in civics, versus focusing only on battling religion.

"These people may enjoy church without believing."
I'm glad we have been given this permission. What else are we allowed to do?

@Delldweller
I'm a Quaker Bright.
I have a purely naturalistic worldview.
Doesn't mean I don't have respect for the wisdom and philosophical insights present in all religious traditions. Doesn't mean I don't respect theists and the other relgious. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy sharing their rituals. I do tend to avoid groups that get threatening if I'm outspoken though.

Great! A great initiative to encourage a positive, naturalistic worldview! I encourage everybody, religous and atheists, to read Richard Dawkins books and to see his films!

@delldweller, on the question of co-existence...she means to include individuals who retain a cultural or nominal affiliation with a religious community while rejecting the supernatural. These people may enjoy church without believing.

A good clear exposition of why Brights are not 'atheists' in the commonly understood meaning of the term. However, I still have difficulty with a naturalistic worldview co-existing with membership of religious organisations which clearly do not have a naturalistic worldview - surely schizophrenia is not far away?
