It may have been less noticeable if they had the retune speed set lower. That is painful to listen to. He crapped on the national Anthem as not being a very good song in a press conference before his performance. Maybe someone behind the scenes was upset about him insulting the anthem and got some payback!!

LOL, people aren't saying he was using auto-tune because it sounded good!

The over use of auto-tune is what made it sound bad! It's blatantly obvious. Once you've used auto-tune and understand how it works, you will be able to hear when it's being used... and it was used.

the most damning evidence of auto-tune: 0:36 - the dawn's ear-ly light. I have never ever EVER heard an American sing the -ly in early as a natural fourth. even people who have never had musical training know how to sing that note, as a leading tone to the fifth. billy joel is a consumate musician too, there's no way in hell he sang that note. sorry rog turner, but what we have here is a case of auto-tune disgracing our national anthem and I think it's rather obvious

Well it is possible that he just didn't sing the right note. But I do think you're right. And it's really stupid of him to have used something that stops him from singing out of key in a piece where he's supposed to sing a note that isn't in the scale.

I cant believe there is even any debate over this! Cher never used so much autotune as Billy is using for this performance !

Just a couple of points here about this performance and Autotune. If he was using Autotune then I say you can hardly hear it. Billy can sing in tune as he has proved for decades before pitch correction was dreamed up. If he was, then for a guy of 60-something with probably no foldback on the Superbowl stage then I say he has an excuse. What I find inexcusable is the terrible sound that Michael Buble and co make. Just imagine what Johnny Cash would sound like compressed and pitch-corrected. Ugh!

dude, are you deaf? the autotune is obvious as it trills between the half steps. first one is on the word SEE, small one at :41 (proudly) 1:17 thru 1:21 is obvious. Another at 1:42 (yet) Not to mention the PITCH is spot on. Most people can't sing that perfect on key.
