This is one of 3 Whelen WPS-4000 sirens installed by FAU last year to alert the campus to hazards such as a tornado, chemical spill, or campus shooter. This siren should have done: Siren, Voice, Siren, Voice, like the other 2 can be heard doing in the background, but instead did Siren, Voice, Silence, Voice.

This siren had problems during a test in 2008 where the tone would click on and off during the wail cycle. My guess would be that the siren was probably struck by lightning.

The siren could also be oscillating 45º more clockwise. This would provide better coverage for the southern portions of the campus, without beaming too much sound into surrounding neighborhoods.

The siren at the FAU Blvd. split should also probably be moved farther south and set to oscillate 180º into campus. The current siren setup (with another siren located in an empty field next to an abandoned runway, now a parking lot) provides ample, if not excessive coverage to PBCC, while FAU does not receive as much.

I have been told that there were issues with too much noise going to the surrounding communities and the airport. Maybe dB level tests could be done on campus and in the neighborhoods to see if moving a siren location could help these problems and provide a stronger signal on campus.

  • That's exciting =) Though I guess Science & Technology is not necessarily the most exciting category on YT compared to ones with music videos and stuff. It'd be nice if YT's search fixed itself, as it still has the original upload title "FAU Test2" and hasn't changed to the new once since yesterday.

Whelen's rotating sirens oscillate 360 degrees nomally, but this one seems to need a new rotator.
