From the day in 1959 when I began singing tenor with the Four Rascals, to this very day,
I can't begin to describe the joy I have
experienced throughout the years, not only because of our fellowship together (as well as with Lou Perry). Every song we sang had a
story to tell and we were always conscious of the message. We were four baritones and we loved to woodshed. Most of our songs although arranged by Lou were inspired by our woodshedding ability. As a result our music was heartfelt.

Not many things as wonderful as this!

"Little Pal" by the Rascals is one of my all-time favorites.

This is perfect for a movie soundtrack , for somthing realy opposite to the atmosphere of this song ......like a bank robbery scene , or gangster shoot out .

I've been around barbershop quartet singing for over 35 years (3rd generation barbershopper) and even though the modern day quartet's have better singing technique and ringing chords: The old time quartet's like Four Rascals put SO much musicality and heart into their singing. It wasn't all about technique and matching vowels and vertical singing, it was about the heart and story of the music and that's why THEY will live in infamy while other better singing quartets might not. Beautiful job.

This just made me so happy to hear. I may be a young guy in barbershop, but stuff like this is why I sing. Plus, you gotta love 60s tenors. My bass doesn't when I'm screaming in his ear, but you have to keep basses in check anyways.

Thanks for your kind remarks. I did lots of woodshedding at the convention and
hopefully all of us in AHSOW and any others who visited our hospitality room left
with feelings of satisfaction from woodshedding. Ours is a truly unique fellowship
of barbershoppers. May the style of harmony we love so much endure for many generations. Let that be our legacy. Great convention in 2010 - Rascaldon
Check out a picture my Father has of the quartet from 1965 - search Flickr - type "Four Rascals"

In 1959, Lou Perry was approached by the Four Rascals to do an arrangement of Little Pal. He told them, This is garbage and Im not going to arrange anything like that. Soon thereafter, a huge New England snowstorm moved in, and out of boredom he picked up Little Pal and wrote the arrangement that has become the second national anthem for the barbershop world. Two other notable songs were arranged for the Rascals, Im Alone Because I Love You and You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby.

The Nighthawks produced a record in 1962 which this version of Lil Pal heard here is a clear copy of the Nighhawks arrangemnet.
Four Rascals are onsidered one of the more refine quartets ever assembled. (next to the Nighthawks :o))

The Nighthawks did "Little Pal" on the Chord record label was probably arranged by their tenor Greg Backwell who later sang baritone with The Gentelmens Agreement for awhile.
It's definitely a different arrangement. I think the Rascals was first but not positive

This is one of my favorites. Rural Route 4 recorded this arrangement too. I wonder if this is the original?

Little Pal was introduced by Al Jolson in 1929This is the first barbershop version that I know of...probably arranged by Lou Perry. A few years later it was recorded by The Nighthawks. One of my favorites too. Never heard the Roural Route 4 do it though
