Herb Wiedoeft was the brother of Rudy Wiedoeft - „the best saxophonist in the world". He led his band since 1923, but the career of this outstanding orchestra was suddenly cut in May 1928 by the tragic death of its leader in a car accident, in Medford Oregon. After Wiedoeft's death trombonist Jesse Stafford took over the band and released another 13 sides on Brunswick records under the name of the Jessie Stafford Orchestra. Other recordings by Herb Wiedoeft's band were released under the name of Herb Wiedoeft's Cinderella Roof Orchestra (from the Cinderella Roof at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, 506 South Grand Avenue) and Herb Wiedoeft's Famous Orchestra.

Recording:
Herb Wiedoeft & His Orchestra, voc. Clyde Lucas, Leon Lucas - GOLDEN GATE (From the film "The Singing Fool") (Dave Dreyer / Al Jolson / Joseph Meyer / Billy Rose), Brunswick 1928

  • I like the way the recording seems stereo..what a great bass sound!

  • I agree! I've got a copy of the Jolson version on CD and I've played the grooves off of it! Jolson sings it like a hymn to California and the robust prospects of that part of the 20th Century in America.

  • But, the bridge wasn't built until the late 30's was it......I always connect the song with the Golden Gate Bridge and the City of San Francisco and movie of l936 .....................

  • I can't see how any one can call the Jolson version boring, the 1927 version is a classic his voice is red hot, you can't compare the vocals of this one with it. It's one of Jolson's best in my humble version, unless you mean the half talked version in the film 'the Singing Fool.'

  • Thanks for the info.I have several Jesse Stafford records and didn't know it was the Weidoeft Orch.

  • You'll soon get back there and have another chance, or so I hope.

  • I agree with D. This makes me want to hop a flight to SF at this very moment. My favorite bridge. Walked across it many years ago, got dizzy and almost turned back in mid-bridge, then realized that would be just as far as going all the way to Sausalito, from where I took the bus back.

  • What more can I say... you perfectly described my impressions.

  • This bubbly tune, the enthusiastic singing, and these bright and gorgeous posters make me feel like being there right now.
