Mohegan Sun Casino- June 16th --Nguyen Pummels Mohammed
Undefeated featherweight prospect Dat "Dat Be Dat" Nguyen (10-0, 6 KOs) scored a sixth-round technical knockout victory over West Carrolton, Ohio's Yamin Mohammed.
Nguyen, a Vietnamese-born, Hawaii native, bloodied and battered the very game Mohammed throughout the affair, which was slated for 8-rounds.
Nguyen had a great deal of success with lead left hooks and straight rights to the head of Mohammed in the early going, and didn't begin working Mohammed's body until the end of the third stanza.
However, when Nguyen went downstairs, it was immediately evident. In his first determined attempt to connect with his vaunted left hook to the body, Nguyen dropped Mohammed at 2:30 of the third. Mohammed managed to climb back to his feet, just prior to referee Dick Flaherty reaching the count of ten.
Nguyen continued to batter Mohammed in the fourth and fifth rounds, utilizing an array of pugilistic weaponry.
At the close of the fifth round, another left hook from Nguyen, this time to the chin of Mohammed, sent his foe reeling across the ring, only to be held up by the ropes. Flaherty, noticing the assistance the ropes gave Mohammed in staying on his feet, issued an eight count.
Recognizing the trouble his opponent was in, Nguyen increased his assault even more to begin the sixth. Mohammed, a 25-fight veteran, fought back bravely, until a devastating three-punch Nguyen combination forced Flaherty to jump in and mercifully call a halt to the action.
The time of the stoppage was 2:21 of round six.
