During the Vietnam war, the Viet Cong used a cave inside Marble Mountain as a hospital. They also used it to target American troops with mortar and artillery attacks. More about the 2008 Vietnam trip at http://jalimager.blogspot.com
The mountain was laced with caves as a natural feature of the stone I think. We explored in and out of several including one that had a carved statute deep within it. The sunlight pouring into the main temple area was from natural skylights in the rock above...I doubt they were from bombs though may have been.
I was in this monastery in early 1967 ....no hospital inside it then. The Marine helicopter facility did take sniper fire from the mountain at night. We had no idea when exploring that it was a VC sniper location at night

There was no V/C hospital here during the war...locals say American bombing caused the holes in the rock...this also untrue
