I don't blame you there my friend, when I first watched it, I had the same reaction, I thought it was the best trek film to come out in god knows how long. It took me a fair while before I saw it for what it was. I was fairly agitated already when I posted these responses, so I hope you didn't take it to heart, and I hope you'll accept my sincere apologies for taking it further than was necessary.

That I do agree with you completely. The idea that a mining ship of all ships was so powerful was completely unbelievable (in a bad way). The Countdown comics say it was because it was enhanced with Borg technology, but those comics aren't full canon as far as I'm aware of. But even so, that's what they had in the film.

@TheDarkFrontier yeah, I completely agree. I recall that I was doing everything I could to apologise for the film. After taking a deep breath and thinking about the film, I completely agree that the plot was a festering piece of non-sensical drivel.

Also, look at what happened when Red Matter was used in the film. #1 - Romulus' destruction. Nero & Spock was pulled back in time, after it destroyed a supernova. #2 - Vulcan's destruction. #3 - Narada's destruction. In other words, it only works in certain ways when the plot needs it to.
And third, they're using a drill that is boring into the planet's surface. Now ask yourself the same question again. They didn't know they were going to open up a Black Hole inside the planet, no. But what they were doing there was obviously a cause for alarm, otherwise they wouldn't have sent a distress call in the first place, and the ships sent to intercept wouldn't have been destroyed.

@TheDarkFrontier dude, check your notifications. I completely agree; you don't need to continue posting.

Final note; about the Narada's attack on Vulcan. I've heard a few people say they didn't know what the Narada was doing, and thus didn't evacuate. Except in the previous scene, we heard Vulcan had sent a "Distress Call" (see Kirk's trial scene). Obviously what they were doing was a cause for alarm. Second, the ship had just annihilated an entire fleet that tried to intercept it.

@TheDarkFrontier I also find it absurd that a mining ship, even if it were from one hundred years in the future, would have any hope against the Federation fleet. Their phaser and torpedo weaponry would have easily ripped through any form of defense the Narada had; it was just asinine.

One more thing, saying Quantum a few times doesn't make you an informed person on astrophysics. Black Holes are not something that has a personality, it's not something which can be one or the other. Look at Stephen Hawking's papers on the topic, and what has been discovered in recent years about them. Black Holes unquestionably destroy things, because of their immense gravitational strength. They don't allow things to pass through now and again because the plot might need them to.

@TheDarkFrontier I'm actually majoring in astro-physics, and I know. I was doing everything I could to make sense of the film to a reasonable mind. It was a futile attempt.
