Katherine Kristen "Katie" Murray, 16, of La Plata was driving on Oliver Shop Road in La Plata at 10:42 p.m. when she lost control the Honda she was driving Wednesday night and struck a tree, according to a press release from the Charles County Sheriff's Office.
Police said Murray died on the scene.
There were no other people in the car. Murray was wearing a seat belt, police said.
While the crash is still under investigation, according to the release, "icy roads appear to be a contributing factor."
Murray was an 11th-grade student at La Plata High School where Principal Evelyn Arnold said she was a cheerleader.
Arnold said Murray was in several Advanced Placement classes and "pushed herself to do her very best in whatever she did."

MY teacher told us about how she taught at la plata and she had to tell the whole class that she died and EVERYONE cried even the guys rip katie!
