Tiffany Shlain, film director and founder of the Webby Awards, shows a trailer for Connected: A Declaration of Interdependence. "What we're really interested in looking at are the links between issues and how theres unintended consequences, and how things affect each other," she says of the film.

-----

Honored as one of Newsweek's "Women Shaping the 21st Century," Tiffany Shlain is the founder and ambassador of The Webby Awards and an award-winning filmmaker. Tiffany's career is guided by a passion for unraveling complex ideas in unorthodox ways. Her work covers an array of topics, from the internet to politics to religion. She has directed eight films including "Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness," a Sundance Film Festival selection 2003 and broadcast on TV on The Sundance Channel. She studied film theory at U.C. Berkeley and film production at N.Y.U. In addition to her filmmaking, she continues to work on The Webbys and is invited to lecture on both her filmmaking and the web's affect on society.

Currently, she is working on a feature-length film, "Connected: A Declaration of Interdependence," set for completion in the winter of 2009. Her recent art installation, "Smashing," with artist and husband Ken Goldberg premiered in NYC at the Pulse Contemporary Art Fair this past spring. They have two children and live in Northern California.

  • Lots of shit stains on this video. Watch out for the shit stains.

    Thanks.

  • I have no problem with interdependence, as long as it is not coerced or forced.

Voluntary cooperation is a beautiful thing, but the goal of interdependence can also be sought through government force.

This is what she is advocating.

    I'm pro-choice.

    On just about everything.

  • Once we recognize our interdependence, we can recognize our solidarity.

  • @ funkalunatic

My version of interdependence is a win/win situation between 2 parties who cooperate. This is the relationship I have with my spouse, for example.

Ideally 2 me, a country with an abundance of a certain resource can trade it for another, more scarce one that it needs (without our declaring war on them and just 'taking it')

  • cooperation rather than competition; equality for all persons: what a paradigm shift

For me, I would target college campuses and Geek bloggers, like lockernome (YouTube name, has 24hr site)

  • This is "Ode to Joy" and it is the anthem of the EU. How do you like that?

  • I still hope there'll be an "I" in this team.

Is interdependence (or more precisely: complete, universal dependence on ungovernably large complex systems) considered by the film to be a good thing or a bad thing? It's not clear whether the content is supposed to be fascinating or horrifying. By declaring interdependence, are we declaring that it's a problem, or are we embracing it and saying that it's time to throw in the towel in the quest for independence?
