How about some classic Winston Cup racing - the exhibition race at the Calder Park Thunderdome in Melbourne, Australia in 1988: the Goodyear NASCAR 500k.

In honor of Labor Day, I am not going to post my normal race details! LOL How is that for labor?

I do not have the full race, I have a cropped and edited version that jumps ahead a bit in the race, so my apologies.

Please enjoy the race!

  • When did they hold this race in 1988? I heard something like it was after the Richmond 400, so is it in the spring? Miss the days when the schedule allowed for the trips like this... Helped short track racing too when the guys could come run the smaller tracks.

  • taken from Wikipedia:

"The first race that used only the oval was on February 28, 1988, a nationally-televised NASCAR event which featured some of Australia's top touring car drivers as well as a slew of imports from the Winston Cup, including Bobby Allison (who had won the Daytona 500 that same month, giving the Thunderdome race a big publicity boost), Neil Bonnett, Michael Waltrip, Harry Gant, Morgan Shepherd, Dave Marcis, Rick Wilson and others...

  • ...This was the first time a NASCAR event had been staged outside North America and it proved so popular that many of the same drivers returned for another race at the Thunderdome that December, along with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford."

  • i just like seeing the old school cars. i wish nascar would go international and race all over europe japan austrlia etc. i know they race in other countries sometimes/ it should go from nascar to wascar

world association stock car auto racing.

  • I am absolutely shocked that after this race, seeing the size of the crowds in the grandstands, that this didnt get REAL popular down under. maybe they should run a v-8 supercar race there during the endurance portion of the season. and to make it special get marcos ambrose and another cup guy to run a car together in the race.itb be cool to see an oval race with a mandatory driver change.
