Congo has been ravaged by war for the last decade. Millions have died.
Sexual violence against women is one of the weapons which the warring parties use against their opponents. Thousands of women in Congo have been physically and mentally scarred for life.
Justine Masika Bihamba has been supporting these women since the conflicts began in the early '90s. In December 2008 she received the Human Rights Defenders Tulip award for her work.
This film portrays Justine and the work of her organization - Synergy for Women Victims of Sexual Violence - based in Goma, North Kivu Province, Eastern DRC.
TOTAL - 17mins. (In 2 parts) Produced by Zelovic Productions. http://www.zelovicproductions.com

Canadians: make some noise about this situation. Talk to your government reps and Canadian mining company execs. We need to live up to our responsibilities under international human rights laws to protect extraterritorially. We have to care as much about the women of the DRC as we care about the diamonds, gold and coltan we mine in the DRC and profit from. Put the money from mining profits back into the country, to protect women, and rebuild hospitals, schools, roads and dignity, on THEIR terms.
