  • @this331 I completely agree. I found it odd that he would say they lack symbolism. It sort of implies that the earth holds at least some degree of symbolism. I love the sky and clouds. For me at least, the sky represents limitless possibilities and hope.

  • Thank you for the information. I remember Tarkovsky also saying, though I don't remember when, that he dislikes symbolism and that everything in his films are what they are and not symbolic of something else. It is odd then that he would talk about the sky's lack of a symbolic sense. To me clouds are as much a part of life as trees and birds though of course lacking the tactile quality.

  • @this331 Er..scratch that. It was in a 1969 interview during the Moscow FIlm Festival. He doesn't specifically outright say he dislikes clouds but rather that the relation to man and earth is more important than man's relation to the sky. "The sky itself doesn't have a symbolic sense in and of itself...I only give importance to its reflections on earth. He cites the opening of Rublev in that the sky is reflected by puddles on the earth. Yefim is thus related to earth even though he is flying.

  • @this331 During the C.C commentary of Andrei Rublev, Vlada Petric notes that Tarkovsky often makes it a point to exclude clouds from shots in favor of the earth. He gives reasons for excluding clouds. Also, in Sculpting in Time, Tarkovsky talks about this. I forget the exact wording but he mentions how clouds are empty and how he loves his earth.

  • How do you know Tarkovsky doesn't like clouds?

  • Is it a bit ironic that Tarkovsky doesn't like clouds?

But I like what you've done, nonetheless.

  • The guy what understands the art...

i love his movie named Stalker you can watch it fully in google video... its awesome :'( but he died as i remember.

  • interesting - this is from the french jazz cd entitled "nostalgia: a song for tarkovsky", right?
