Glen Gray - Undecided (Shavers) DECCA 64711

*UPDATE *

Just recived this Email.
Hello Mr Gregg

Just by coincidence i found on "You Tube" your recording of "Undiceded" that you credited

to Glen Grey (Name should be Glen Gray ) on Decca - matrix 64711.

In my opinion is this an error, "Undecided" was recorded by John Kirby and his Onyx Club Boys

and recorded 28 october 1938 on Decca 2216 (Matrix 64711)

I totaly agree it sounds a LOT like John Kirby

Now before I start getting technical about this and other 78 restorations let me tell you a bit about why I'd even attempt to do this.
Im a big fan of the Big Bands to the point I've spent more than 10 years presenting "Swing Type" Radio shows showcasing top swing bands of the day (and today!) playing arrangements that are SOLID! not the same old same old "In the mood" "Sing Sing Sing" stuff oh no sir, in over 1000+ shows I've not trotted out the old "standards" but played top arrangements that you may have never heard. In doing this I would pull out old LP's and Buy loads of CD's, Now i used to get VERY VERY annoyed when I'd hear a 78 that had A LOT of "Work" on it. to the point that all the "Top End" was gone. OK it takes most of the "scratchiness" away yes i agree, but it also kills the music FULL STOP. Now when i was a lad and played 78's quite a bit, If some mad scientist offered me a device that would take away 10 say 20 percent of the surface noise I'd have paid the earth!!.. so now 20 years later why do people think that if its not "clinical clean" Its not a good job?!?!? Well let me tell you as a Audio engineer AND a Muso that almost 70% of my 1000's of CD's are pretty much Junk to my ears. OK Ok you might think I'm mad at this point but when i hear a Sax section sound like it's underwater you might know what i mean. so i spent a few good years recerching how would be the best way to play and clean these 78's for my radio shows. after reading 40 years (1939-1980) of back issues of "Radio and Hobbies" I had a far idea on the technical aspects of the era that made the discs then i spend a few years perfecting the true Pre-Amp that would play me back ALL the sounds on disc. then i got myself a set of Truncated Elliptical Needles ( yes how quaint I call em Needles) But now i could Transfer the discs fine i needed the software to Master them. Well having a good play with the software over 10 or so years I have used it all. and it's all pretty Dire if you need to clean Properly. so I wrote some software myself, made me a few plug-ins and used a few existing ones and voila the Full Frequency range on the 78's to YOU without the Great treble Cut type of restoration usually heard.

  • No, on second thought, the record IS off-center. Depends on if I'm looking at the "long shot" or the "close up".

  • @Rajamuttu

The video is a "fake" as are all my videos, when i transferred all these discs I didn't own a camera, So one night I borrowed a camera and filmed a a few discs spinning. I still use that footage 4 years later. at the time when I filmed all these "bits" that turntable in the videos was broken and not set up properly, Its not the Turntable I made the transfer from anyway. Ive used a couple of TT's for transferring over time. and its not the stylus either, But yeah A nice one at that

  • @Rajamuttu

I spent a bit of time setting the turntable up and rebuilding the tonearm set up somewhat, Its now ok, but then it was shocking!

  • Thanks much apreciated!!..

and what a cool version this is!

  • This music will never die, thanks to hundreds of marvellous recordings which CAN be restored. The Big Band Era of 1935-1946 was simply a magical time which will never come again.

  • Thanks so much for restoring. I hope this music will never die.

  • @Rajamuttu ...Nope, the record is not off center, just the label. Look at the periphery of the record and you'll see that it's concentric.

  • I am NOT "Undecided", I love this one!

  • Fantastic! Do the records have to be pretty clean, or can they be kinda grungy? I suppose that it can't fix needle chatter from being played on a stiff pick-up. Sounds amazing, though. I, too, am sick of the results heard on most digital re-mastering of these records. I'd rather listen to the original record, because there's just so much more there. ...But you've captured all of that here without the noise!

  • @ade425mxy

    Well, that explains it.

    Good job on good work!

  • Funny how the label and the hole are off-center ,,, but you made sure the record itself was centered. Bully for you!

And you chose the right needle, too!

But the "close-up" suggests that the needle / cartridge / cartridge holder is tilted a bit to the right. Both the real cartridge and it's mirror version on the record should be absolutely parallel to each other.

Then again, it's hard to tell from here.
