i believe the sounds come from devices called GTO thyristors, which feed pulses (the gear changing sounds) of current to the traction motors.
according to wikipedia: "the noise is produced by the oxygen in the air vibrating as the magnetic field changes (oxygen is magnetic whereas nitrogen is not)."
