You use the D-pad to change the trajectory, and you use the control stick to line up the dot with the circle when you swing.

So the trick to this is, aim far in front of the pin so the ball doesn't roll past it?

Pretty much, yeah. If it rolls too far away, you're going to have a tough putt shot to make.
