The government keeps the property. If we deposed the monarchy the treasury would have to give all their property back (which all profits and gratuities it has held for a long time), suffice to say the sheer income from one of the largest land owners in the country is obscene. None the less the monarchy survives these days because it is profitable and highly so with such a huge margin it is not even funny. I am not a monarchist but I am a pragmatist. :)

The cost of keeping the monarchy is just shy of £40 million per annum, and that is their extended family (even though many Windsors are too distant in relation to receive a royal salary). If you take into account the fact that the UK government raises approximately £600 billion per year in taxes then you'll see that in reality 0.006(7)% of our tax money goes towards the royal family, that's about 1p for every £1.67 in tax. Not a huge amount.
