The Shenyang J-15 carrier-fighter is the chinese indigenous multirole update of the Sukhoi Su-33 carrier fighter.

The J-15 is expected to serve onboard the Ex-Varyag aircraft-carrier that is in its final phase of refurbishment in Dalian and to be expected to sail in mid 2011 to 2012.
The J-15 is expected to be powered initially by two Russian AL-31F engines, which is to be replaced by Chinese WS-10 Taihang engines in its production version.
It is equipped with the most modern avionics suite available to the Chinese aviation industry's 4th-generation fighter fleet today, including UV-band Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS), wide-angle holographic HUD, full digital "glass cockpit", solid-state processing unit, onboard oxygen generator system (OBOGS), and a multirole X-Band pulse-doppler radar (unconfirmed rumours indicated that it might even be a X-Band AESA Radar) with Air-to-Air, Air-to-Ground and Air-to-Sea roles, which everything the original Russian Su-33 lacked.
Furthermore, it is expected that the J-15 has a much reduced RCS compared to the original Su-33, due to its high degree of composite construction and application of RAM-coatings.

Air-to-Air weapons for the J-15 will include PL-12 Sino-AMRAAM medium range missiles with active-passive dual mode seekers, PL-11 Semi-Active Radar-Homing medium range missile, PL-8 Infra Red-Homing SRAAM, and the new PL-10 advanced short range high-off-boresight close combat missile.

Air-to-Ground weapons are comfirmed to be the KD-88 and C-80X-series of Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles with supersonic terminal stage. But it is expected, due to the advanced multirole radar, that YJ-91 anti-radiation missiles, LT series of laser/TV guided precision bombs and LS-series of satellite guided glide bombs comparable with the USAF JDAM, are also able to be launched from the Shenyang J-15.

The J-15 Carrierborne Multirole Fighter will enable China to gain valuable first experiences with the operation of a carrier-fighter and a carrier air-group, until Chinese indigenous aircraftcarriers and carrierfighters will be developed in the future.

true. but a much improved copy.

It fulfills more the role like the F/A-18 Superhornet strike fighter, than the purely air-superiority role of the original Su-33.

Advanced avionics and modern chinese active radar missiles and anti-shipping munitions are the key-parts which keeps the J-15 apart from the basic Su-33.

I wish the russians would do something like this too (ie. updating the Su-33), instead of going for the MiG-29 for their carrier aviation...

For those who say that this is a "copy", it shows how little you know about aviation or this aircraft.

If you know anything about military aircraft, you would know that looks itself means almost nothing.

The J-15 uses completely new Chinese-developed technology, even the engines and the RAM coating. The only non-Chinese component is the Su-33 airframe. Besides that, all the main and important components are Chinese-developed. It's pretty much a Chinese fighter in a Russian skin.

The LCA has inferior range compared to the JF-17 and unlike the LCA, the JF-17 is fully indigenous, where as the LCA is just an indian airframe with foreign engines electronics and radar. However the indian military is more transparent than china, you know what they do at all times. Our governmeent (China) never really tells us what they're up to...

Meh... The Shenyang factory never really designs stuff. They just copy. Chengdu on the other hand actually has the brains to design.
