  • "our fire departments, police, and military have been around long before the concept of socialism."

Yeah, kinda like bartering was around long before the concept of money.

  • Not to mention our fire departments, police, and military have been around long before the concept of socialism. Socialist programs in the United States include Medicare, like you mentioned, welfare, social security, etc. Thank you for sharing your opinions, pissysteve. This has been an interesting debate thus far, and I respect your opinions.

  • You bring up a good point by saying if he were a socialist, he would say "the community as a whole would own the mine." However, pure socialism does not exist; it becomes perverted into what Cuba, Russia, etc. have turned it into: the government having all the power and the people having none. The "health" of the society is also a gray area, since this may different from person to person. In a society like our's, if you own a mine, you hire people to work in them.

  • ...you arrogant and ignorant piece of cancer!

  • And he believes that such governmental decisions about ownership should be determined on a case by case basis, and that private ownership is just fine (in fact, preferable in many instances) as long as the "health" (or the good) of the society is going to be given proper, due, (and let's face it, ultimately logical) respect by the private owners.

  • He believes that in some unique settings, the good of society outweighs the desire to give a very small group of people a fantastic chance to reel-in some big money.

In a dangerous mine, for example, people can very easily DIE. He thinks it makes sense to have the mine owned by the potential victims of poor mine management themselves, as egregiously unnecessary mining accidents persist with unacceptable frequency just because the mining companies cut corners to save big bucks.

  • "How can he say that... people who work in mines should own them? The man is a socialist."

If he were a socialist, he would be saying that the community as a whole should own and operate ALL means of production, distribution and exchange and ALL services in ALL industries. He has never said this.
