You can't really see anything of real significance in this video (due to the snow), but what I am standing on is the launching area of an old Nike AJAX Surface-to-Air missle base.

For a nice history of this base, please visit: http://nikehercules.tripod.com/d-97.html

It was operational between 1955 and 1963. At one time, there was up to 30 Nike missles sitting underneathe the snow-covered concrete structure on which I am standing.

To bad there is a lot of snow. I will defineately have to come back sometime over the summer and get some better videos and pictures. Until then, enjoy!

  • You mean like this place was built during the Cold War for like missile defense/to shoot back missiles??? wow

  • Yes, that would be correct. It became operational in 1955, which historians could argue predates the technical beginning of the Cold War.

The missles that would have been surface-to-air missles (as opposed to intercontinental surface-to-surface missles) that would be used to stop a forign invasion from the air. :-)
