Froude realized that ship resistance was the function of two components: residuary (wave making) and frictional resistance. Towing a ship model will give the total resistance of the model which though geometric similitude can be related to the ship resistance. The wave making resistance is function of geometry and can be scale using the Froude number (Fn) of the body. Frictional resistance is a function of Reynolds number (Rn) which is the ration of the inertial forces to the vicious forces. Froude towed series of flat plates in order to find out what their frictional resistance was. This was the bases of the work done by others to create the International Towing Tank Conference 1957 Skin friction lines based on Rn. The frictional resistance of a model is calculated from this line and then backed out of the total resistance and the residuary resistance based on Fn found.
