Leigh is correct in the characterization of the jhana 1-3. He separates the tranquility practice with the insight practice however, they can be blended and are described as such in the Suttas. Leigh refers to Jhana as absorption however Jhana practice may be developmental depending on how the meditator applies the 7 Factors. Another way to think about it is to recognize hindrances as they arise. This balances mindfulness and with concentration. Bingo. You enter a developmental Jana. s.j.
