Excellent work, I would describe that flute as having a bright tone, how you would expect a sunflower to sound i guess :) I like the story behind it to.

I've never heard of such a flute before and that's quite impressive that you've made it yourself! Your flute playing is equal if not better than your flute crafting. Congrats!

John, I'd really like to buy one of your sunflower flutes! After hearing one played by Bruce (aka "Piria Jeoshi') here on YouTube, and after reading his description of how he bought it from you, now I'd like to have one just like his. Is this possible? Will you be offering these for sale on your website? Will you offer these for sale any time soon at a show in the U.S., near southern California? I have 14 Native American flutes and I'd really like to add one of these to my collection, too.

@dorotwhy The link has been removed from the internet group as the poster believes that sunflower stalk flutes are not the best way to start making flutes as they are more complicated. I can send you the contact information for the man who makes sunflower stalk flutes if you wish to deal directly with him.

@Woody2chuck Thank you! I would be grateful if you would send me the link. If it is too much of a bother for you though, let me know and I'll make an attempt at searching for it.

@dorotwhy I have not made one from sunflower stalks yet, but those who have use the larger stalks from the Mammoth Sunflower. There are instructions on one of the Yahoo groups. If you want I will try to find the link for you.

@Woody2chuck Thank you :O) My princess didn't "plant" any sunflowers this season...but they decided they enjoyed the bed and returned on their own :O) I was planning to compost the stalks this week but now I have other plans :O) I'm not sure how successful I'll be with the flute-making though...I have several varieties of sunflowers. Which will make the best flute?

@dorotwhy many flutemakers leave the sunflower stalks out overwinter before making flutes from them. It softens the exterior fibers and makes them easlier to remove.
Thanks for your kind words. I've made a few of them in the past year or so, and they all sound different. I harvested almost 50 stalks this year...some of them may wind up as flutes, I reckon.

I'm flattered that you ask. Thanks for the thought but, no, I do not sell my flutes. I don't money to be involved in any way with my flutes. All best, John.

Thank you for your kind words. I am working on my third sunflower flute just now -- kind of tricky in place but fun to do. Love your flute videos. All best, Tomifobia/John Mahoney, Muskrat Lake, Cobden, Ontario

Great and beautiful work, my Brother! I made a few sun flower flutes from the stalks of sunflowers I grew in Pittsburgh, PA around 1975. I still have one of them, a shakuhachi style flute that people usually think is made of bone, because I sanded and polished it and it is yellowish white. Later I learned of sunflower flutes made in Hungary.
