Sultan High School, Sultan Washington - Spring Concert, March 18, 2010

Jazz Band

Director: Jill Sumpter

When Mrs. Sumpter introduced this piece, she said they had just begun to learn it, and some of it would even be newly improvised during the concert (after all it is a jazz band). She said something like, "Who knows what will happen during the performance?" and announced, "PLEASE don't put this on YouTube tonight."

However, you can see that everyone was having fun, and that the performance came off wonderfully. After the concert, several of the band members told me they hoped it would show up on YouTube after all. When I asked Mrs. Sumpter about uploading it, she didn't object, so here it is. (Besides, it was the next morning before I could upload it.)

Note (March 19): I just got an email from a band member who told me all of the solos including drums were improvised during the concert.

This small high school, in a little town at the foot of the Cascade Mountains, has a music department to be totally proud of. It is lead by an awesome music director and faithfully supported by a large group of involved parents.

What makes their great quality so remarkable is that more than 1/3 of the Sultan High School students participate in the music program - a WAY higher portion than in most high schools.

There's lots going on here including some students dancing in the hall outside the back corner door of the gym.

Note: Maybe you can tell that I'm a PROUD Sultan High graduate (from the class of 1964). Tom C. :-)

Note: I do not own the copyright to this material.
This was uploaded primarily so that the high school students and their director can review their performance for educational purposes, and secondarily so the students and their families can view the performance.

  • hey are you gonna put the video of honor choir, "I shall not be moved", with leah's solo?

  • @mrphatmanzach - Hi Zach, Leigha already uploaded it on her channel and I favorited it. Actual name "I Shall Not Be Moved" If you don't find her channel, look at the second listed "favorite" on my channel home page.

Thanks for watching! By the way, were you in any of the bands or choirs?

  • A swinging piece, tell the kids they are A1.
