First time doing Tameshigiri

Hey, so this video is meant to show friends and family Shinkendo.
This is my first time doing Tameshigiri (Cutting). This was at the Honbu Dojo in Los Angeles under Obata Kaiso excellent training.
And for the record, for the beginning swings, I wasn't missing I was getting used to the weight and feel of the sword.

What is the material you are cutting? Are those type of swords always used with two hands?

We are cutting tatami mats, also called tatami omote.

Yes, these shinkens are typically used with two hands. There are some instances where you strike with one hand, as well as nitoken (two sword).

personally i find the kiriyagi cuts the hardest to do. any advice on that?

There are a lot of different reasons kiriyagi cuts don't work. It can be something as simple as being too far away (have to be close so you're cutting with the 2/3rd part of the blade, to far away and you're just knicking it with the tip). Then it gets into body mechanics (lifting and twisting from the hips). There is also follow through (i.e. are you flicking at the end with the wrist or cutting the entire way up almost into Jo-dan gammi. These are the common reasons, hope they help!

Usually 18, there have been exceptions but that is on a case by case basis. And thank you.

When you are using a katana, you don't need to use 2 hands all the time. Some people wields it with one hand
