Approaching and Landing in Hong Kong Kai Tak, ICAO VHHX, China
First to all people who do not like this video and rated it as bad: please be fair and leave a comment why you dont like/d it. So i dont have to wonder why. thanks!!
Aircraft Type: Boeing 747-400 3-Class, CF6 Engines
Aircraft Load: ZFW 241 to, Fuel Remaining at Video start 13,4 to

Weather Conditions at VHHX:
Wind 053/15, Rain, TAT+25°C, Runway 13 IGS in use, overcast, Runway wet

Planned Landing Configuration:
Flaps 30, Autobrakes 2, Missed Approach Altitude 4500 feet, Vref 144 Knots+10 (Final Appr. Speed 154), Speedbrakes armed, Standard Missed Approach Procedure, Prefered Runway exit after braking action: Highspeed-Exit Runway 13

Special Equipment in use:
Continous Ignition: on (protection against Engine Flameout in heavy rain), Wipers:on
Transponder Mode: TA only (no conflict with other Airplanes)

Radiotuning:
Manual tuned VOR/ADF Recivers for the IGS Approach (CH-VOR, SL NDB)

Final Approach Procedure:
Autothrottle-, Autopilot-disconnection at approx. 1600 feet agl, then manual flying.
Taking the plane a bit left of the localizer to get more rrom for the final turn to increase the passenger comfort. Flightdirector-Off at 1000 feet agl. After passing the Middle Marker and a height of 560 starting the final turn with approx. 600-800 fpm descent rate. Completing turn and aligning with the centerline at approx. 120-140 feet agl. Correcting vertical Profile for the Touchdown. At 100 feet agl reducing thrust very smooth, at 50 feet reducing Thrust faster down to idle. Starting Flare at approx. 40 feet agl. Touchdown is very smooth!

After Touchdown:
Verifying Speedbrakes up, verify Autobrakes 2 braking action, set Reverse Thrust as desired, align the airplane with the runwaycenterline. At 80 Knots bringing out the Reverse to idle, braking manual. At 30 Knots Groundspeed turning the Plane through the High Speed Runway Turnoff lefthand.

When stopped:
Turning off Landing-, Wing-, Runway Turnoff-, and Strobelights. Turning on Taxilights. The Lightconfiguration should be now: Taxi-, Logo-, Navigation- and Beaconlights on.
Contacting Kai Tak Ground and get Taxi Clearance, Retracting Flaps, Detend Speedbrakes, Set 6.0 Units Stabilizer Trim, Weather Radar off, Transponder Standby, APU start, Continous Ignition off, Cancel Eicas Messages, set Audio Panel as desired

Performing After Landing Checklist:

Strobes and Landing Lights: OFF
Transponder: Standby
Flaps: Retracting/UP
Speedbrakes: DOWN
Weather Radar: OFF
Stabilizer Trim: 6.0 Units
APU: Starting

Taxi Clearance Recived:
Advance smoothly Thrustlevers to accelerate to approx. 25 Knots Groundspeed for straight Taxiways.

At the Gate:
Set Parking Brake, Turn off Demand Pumps 1,2,3, Pump 4 Aux. Connect Apu Generator 1 and 2, Verify APU Power supplying the Systems. Turn off the Engines and verify running down. Switch-Off Seatbelt Signs. Switch Off all Fuelpumps, Switch off Pack 2 and 3. Switch Off IRS Selectors 1,2,3, Set Standard MCP Settings (Speed 200 Heading 000 Altitude 10000), Set EFIS Standard Settings, Verify Event Times in the CDU-ACARS Menue.

Perform Shutdown Checklist to Secure:
Parking Brake: SET TO PARK
Ext/Apu Power: As Connected/verify
Demand Pumps: OFF/AUX
Fuel Control Switches: CUTOFF
Passenger Signs: ON/OFF
Anti Ice: OFF (Auto not simulated in the PMDG!!!)
Beacon :OFF

  • wheres the checker board? u know kai tak's famous for that.

    Take a look to the left side of the captains windshield at 2:01. There you will notice a dimly illuminated checkerboard on the famous checkerboard hill. I have flown this approach a little bit left of the localizer (real procedure) to have more room for the turn. Following the approach light system mounted on the roofs of kowloon is a bad idea because the bank during the final turn will be to steep. Real pilots approaching kai tak often prefered to fly a bit left of the loc
