One of the two surviving film clips of Woody Guthrie performing. This one, of "Ranger's Command," is from 1945. The other, of "John Henry," with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, is already on YouTube.

  • See the turn table at the beginning of the video? That means he's lip singing to this. WHICH means this video is like a pre-historic to the videos we see today

  • @AngelaRed No -- the turntable you see at the left of the picture is the recording machine. You can also see a microphone connected to it. That's how they did it in 1945 - before tape - they cut the sound straight onto a blank disc.

  • He didn't write 'House of the Rising Sun'. The song is known as a 'traditional' song, probably written in the late 1800s. Nobody knows who wrote it actually.

  • heh - i don't think so

  • Its such a shame we dont have more video of Woody singing his masterpieces! Great song! short as it was

  • hero of the highest order. blasphemy to say somethin negative about this man

  • people think Mr guthrie was some sort of Hero, but in fact if you met him , he would have been quite difficult to get on with, he, was after all hard drinking okeh, he was only human after all and he like ever person has his faults. I suppose you will have to read Joe Kliens Autobiography to understand this.

  • The nine people who "disliked" this video must be some kinda fascist.

  • @guthriewillow Peace and solidarity to you young one! Hold tight to your convictions!

  • Such a calming, soothing voice. It's unfortunate so few videos of the man taken during his lifetime survive. America's bard.

The immortal pre-1950 musical artists are a marvel and revelation to behold.

  • Amazingly powerful, this is not vintage, is eternal

  • @RegardsPaul330 hahaha nice try, though
