This is my favourite poem, by my favourite poet - the young boyfriend of Paul Verlaine, another mid19th century French poet. They were both hounded by French society of the time, once their relationship became very public through some rather more baudy poems than this one.

I ran away in 1985, at the age of 21, and arrived in Boulogne with 34p in my pocket, and spent 5 months begging and hitching around Europe, with one book in my rucksack - the poems of Arthur Rimbaud.

The full test is here.

  • beautiful!

  • Oops! Now I have an erection.

  • My translation begins with the because..... line then goes he is......

  • Wonderful reading. Well done!

  • I have to agree with Jim: superb!

  • Absolutely superb I have not heard a better reading at youtube or elsewhere for that matter I hope you will put your obvious talent to good use and give us more of not only Rimbaud, but many more poets.

Thankyou for this straight into my favourites and a very desrving 5 stars.

    Kind Regards

    Jim Clark

  • really good reading, this is sort of how i would imagine rimbaud reading his poetry, except in french of course

  • There are many videos on YouTube of oral interpretations of Rimbaud that are horribly done... and this video is not one of them. It is good that you have shown compassion to the poem, unlike many others.

  • I loved this. It gave me goosebumps. You really bring this poem to life. Please, please, please read some more. Thanks so much.

  • Your recitation really evoked the spiritual presence of this poem, and it evoked for me a new level of meaning that I'd missed before. As much as Rimbaud is a joy to read, he may even be more so to hear!
