If Alfie Kohn watched The Office, this is what I think he would say about Schrute Bucks.

couldn't tell you who the members of the Supreme Court are, or recite the constitution word-for-word, or tell you what half the terms used in congressional jargon mean without any context.

Research shows that rewards for mindless repetitive work do increase productivity. However, it backfires for any work requiring problem solving or creativity. Automation is quite good at doing the repetitive tasks required. youtube "Dan Pink and the surprising truth about what motivates us" for more insight. the larger the monetary reward the worse the performance.

But the issue here is that the rewards are junk - Schrute Bucks, stickers, etc. Rewarding work clearly is effective, as its what nearly every company does. They, however, choose to reward their workers with money rather then junk, which is something the workers actually want, and thus far more effective. Then again, thats common sense - and, as a result, its common sense that the idea of rewarding workers is infact effective.

I'd tell him to create a bank account, deposit the Schrute bucks to let them gain value and then shove them up his butt!!!! Lol.

If you are claiming him to be a fraud because he is paid for his work (monetary rewards), is it that simple of an equation? Daniel Pink offers insights into motivation and the effects of "carrots & sticks" on behavior & intellectual risk-taking. Money can't hurt, but people are often motivated by more than a paycheck. There's a deeper satisfaction that comes from a job well-done or taking on a new challenge. Don't we all aspire to get paid to do what we are passionate about?

I think the lesson to be learned is that rewards must be worthy to the those who must perform the task. If you offer rewards which are worthless to the people being tasked, the task itself is deemed as worthless as the reward.

Alfie Kohn makes some very good points, america would be so much better if classrooms were commie factories led by hippies, and parents had no clue how good their kids were performing in school.

Who needs to know that europe is a CONTINENT and not a country, anyway? rite?
