On April 21, Obama signed the Serve America Act, which will use $1.1 billion in earmarks from the 2010 budget to reauthorize and expand programs offered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The Serve America Act, co-sponsored by Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy, intends to extend AmeriCorps membership from 75,000 to 250,000 by 2017.

@elfgirl3 Wow you're an idiot, City Year is endorsed by republicans and democrats alike and has been around since the late 80s. Helping children, the majority being minorities less fortunate than you meet proficiency levels in school doesn't mimic Hitler's youth corps at all. City Year's mission is to instill the importance of diversity into its corps members, do a little research before you spread fear and lies on the internet.

something is wrong when its called 'mandatory voluntary'..not now but we'll be seeing that part of it in 2013...it will be mandatory that all ages 18-42 serve a mandatory time 'volunteering', ages 18-25 have to go to mandatory basic military training and 'volunteering'. this isnt america anymore, were exactly what our founding fathers fought so hard against. hr 1388 is not freedom.

in what way does Habitat for Humanity help the 10% control the 90%? by becoming partners with impoverished families and helping them to build and maintain their house, which is provided to them through an interest free mortgage assessing only the material cost of the house? by revitalizing communities across the country that have been left out to dry when industry left and poverty took hold?
