Jane Campion: The Film School Years interview

"A twenty-minute interview by critic and teacher Peter Thompson shot in 1989." This was in the special features of the Criterion DVD of the movie "Sweetie". I found it interesting and didn't see it on youtube so I thought I'd put it up myself. I edited out a few clips from some shorts Jane Campion made and put a longer version of the clip they had at the end, which is from the ending of the short "A Girl's Own Story". It's like a music video at the end... The music was apparently written by the guy who directed "The Crow", and Jane Campion wrote the lyrics. It's kinda catchy, if you like depressing music. Reminded me a bit of The Cure's early stuff (the beat, anyway...).

I should add, I am now making my first film just 5 months after I left film school.

I completely relate to her comments about film school. I too believed that every exercise was an opportunity to explore my craft. I got so frustrated with the lack of vision and courage to push forward by other students and also tutors who tried to make me just do the exercise that I decided to leave. I am now making my first film with funding.
