Sarajevo was one of the linguistic centers, from early 70 years of the last century until 1992, together with the Copenhagen and St. Petersburg, but beginning of the war ended this tradition. International Burch University (IBU) organizing the First International Conference on Teaching of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics (FLTAL) brought back glory to Sarajevo.


From 5th to 7th of May International Burch University was a host of international conference entitled First International Conference on Teaching of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics (FLTAL), with emphasize on linguistic and cultural diversity in the knowledge society, intercultural and trans-national perspective.

Conference importance is more significant that the keynote speakers are remarkable experts:

- Ms. Susan M. Gass, a professor at Michigan University and Director of Centre for English Language;




- Mr.. Larry Selinker, professor of linguistics at the University of Michigan and professor of applied linguistics at the University of London,




- Ms. Suzanne Romaine, professor at Oxford University.

Beside academicians FLTAL conference also hosted very important guests, ambassadors, politicians and other officials of Bosnia and Herzegovina's and foreign organizations. First day ceremony was opened by short addressings of

After opening speeches, keynote speech by Susan Gass, Distinguished Professor of Michigan State University was held. Afterwards all particiapnt had an opportunity to meet and present their papers.

Second day of FLTAL conference H.E. Ambassador Patrick S. Moon, US Ambassador in Bosnia and Herzegovina addressed to atendees. H.E. US Ambassador expressed his pleasure on attending the conference on English language teaching and linguistics in Bosnia, especially it is organized by recently founded private university. H.E. Ambassador thanked International Burch University for hosting this conference that ¸¸shows their ongoing commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina and to academic excellence¸¸.

Afterwards conference program went on by keynote speech of Suzanne Romaine, Merton Professor of Oxford University and Larry Selinker, Research Production Associates Director.

International Burch University each year continues to organize international scientific meetings annually, In order to promote scientific research, experience exchange and cooperation of experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad, IBU organizes international conference each year.

This year during the two days of working part of the symposium was presented 330 scientific and research papers on 66 sessions, and individual and group papers, posters, electronic posters and workshops. At the same time 9 parallel sessions on the topics of adoption and language learning, language education, linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, semantics, applied linguistics, the application of scientific methods and testing in language education was going on.

The volume of the conference demonstrates the fact of more than 400 mainly foreign, and domestic experts in linguistic practices, from around 50 countries worldwide, Canada, USA, Japan, Sweden, Malaysia, Italy, Polish, Czech, Portugal, Spain , Greece and the Balkans, Serbian, Croatian, Montenegro, Macedonia and many other countries.




Scientific articles and materials presented during the conference is published in the proceedings of printed and electronic form, so that new techniques of language teaching and the results of other studies are available to public.
